Yesterday at MWC, Samsung finally unveils its two new “S” Series’s flagships called Samsung Galaxy S9 & S9+. In terms of looks and design (almost) both the phones looks pretty much the similar to its predecessor Galaxy S8 & S8+. At the first glance, you will barely find any major design difference in the new Galaxy S9 & S9+ but on a closer look, you will find some minor design changes and they are “Good Changes”.
Samsung is claiming that the display of S9 & S9+ is brighter than the S8 but it is really hard for a human eye to notice few more nits of brightness without really comparing it. All along, Galaxy S9 & S9+ have the beautiful, bright & attractive display.
Though the Galaxy S9 & S9+ looks familiar to S8 owners, there are still some changes in the physical dimensions of the phone. The Galaxy S9 has dimensions of 147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5 mm and S8 has dimensions of 148.9 x 68.1 x 8 mm that made Galaxy S9 little bit thinner than the Galaxy S8. So, you can throw the S8 cases if you are planning to update to Galaxy S9.
Another significant change you would see is the Finger-print scanner. The fingerprint scanner of the Galaxy S9 & S9+ is now moved at the back, below the camera which is still a better positioning than the side of the camera like in S8 & Note 8. Another thing that is worth mentioning with the security perspective is the face unlock and IRIS scanner.
Samsung has done something really good with unlocking the phone. You can unlock the Galaxy S9 & S9+ with IRIS or with face unlock but the good thing is if due to low light or a bad angle, IRIS failed to scan them eye, the phone will automatically switch to face detection to unlock the phone which is really a great software gimmick.
Apart from that, the physical look of the Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus is pretty much same. You will get the same positioning of Power, Volume, Bixby keys.
There is still Headphone jack in Galaxy the S9 & S9 Plus (Thank You Samsung), both the phones has USB Type-C port and supports fast wired charging and fast wireless charging. The speaker of Galaxy S9 is now improved and supported by Dolby Atmos for better sound production.
Talking about the Heart and Brain of Galaxy S9 & S9+, both the phones run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor (USA & China Only) coupled with 4GB RAM (S9) & 6GB RAM (S9+). For other countries, the processor would be replaced with Exynos 9810 processor. You will get 64GB, 128GB & 256GB Storage variant option with expandable storage up to 256GB. Galaxy S9 has the powerhouse of 3,000 mAH battery while for massive 6.2-inch display, S9+ has 3,500mAh battery.
Galaxy S9: The Reimagined Camera
Here is something really new about the new Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus. While taking a glance, there is a big change in the physical design of the camera which is now positioned vertically. Along with the outer camera changes, there are some camera changes from the inside also. The Galaxy S9 has 12MP single camera sensor but what is “Redesigned” here is the new camera system.
Note: The aperture can switch in between the f/1.5 or f/2.4 either automatically or manually in the Pro-Mode but there is no option to set the aperture in between the two values.
The Galaxy S9+ is coupled with Dual 12MP camera lenses, one with the Variable Aperture Lens and another with the fixed aperture of f/2.4 for Wide angle shots and portrait shots (Live Focus, that’s what Samsung calls).
Apart from that, you can now record Slo-Mo video at 960FPS at 720P which is insanely Slooo-Mooo. The intelligent camera software automatically senses the movements in the video and start recording even if you missed the moment.
For selfies, both Galaxy S9 and S9+ is coupled with 8MP f/1.7 camera which can also capture portrait selfies. Portrait selfies are software processed images as there is no secondary camera at the front for the portrait job.
Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus: What Else is New?
We already covered a lot of the new Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus. The design is pretty much similar to S8 & S8 Plus. The camera is redesigned and it is really an awesome job by Samsung. There are some software gimmicks which makes S9 different from its predecessor. One is the new Camera app. The S9 & S9+ has new camera app and switching to the different mode is easier. Just with the swipe on the screen, you can switch to different camera modes.
Apart from that, to answer Apple for Animoji in the iPhone X, Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus has a new AREmoji which basically is a camera job. First of all, it will take your photos with front facing the camera and then turn it to a 3D Stickers. You can talk and add facial expressions in the Stickers and be sending them on messaging app is also easy. All along, AREmoji is a well-executed answer to Apple for Animoji.
Bixby is also improved. Now Bixby can translate languages in real time. All you need to do is pointing the phone’s camera on the words (different language) and Bixby will translate it in the real time on screen.
